The BMW X1 goes on sale October 2009. In Europe. Word has it that it won’t come to the United States until 2011. At the risk of stating the obvious, the X1 is an SUV of sorts based on BMW’s 1 Series. It will be available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, with a choice of gasoline- or diesel-powered engines. In the interim, BMW will launch a revamped, more upscale X3, so by time the X1 arrives we’ll probably already have another cute-ute: the Mini Crossman. The SUV isn’t dead, it’s just shrinking.
